نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ

A warning to all humans.

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ

For anyone amongst you who wants to advance or regress.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ

Every soul is trapped by her deeds.

إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ

Except the dwellers of The Bliss.

فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

While in paradises they ask-

عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

-of the guilty.

مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ

What caused you to end up in Hell?

قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ

They say; we were not one of those who observed the contact prayer.

وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ

Nor did we ever feed the poor.

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ

And we used to blunder with the blunderers.

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

And we used to deny the Day of Faith.

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ

Until we came face to face with reality.

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ

Then the intercession of the intercessors did not benefit them.

فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ

Then why are they so averse to this reminder?

كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ

Just like donkeys running away.

فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ

Fleeing from a lion.

بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً

On the contrary, each one of them wants to receive the scripture personally.

كَلَّا بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ

Absolutely, they do not fear the Hereafter.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ

Absolutely, this is indeed a reminder.

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ

Therefore, anyone who wills shall take heed.

وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ

And no one will take heed, unless in accordance with God’s will. He is the source of righteousness; He is the source of forgiveness.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God; The All-Gracious, The All-Merciful.

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

I swear by the Day of Resurrection.

وَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلنَّفْسِ ٱللَّوَّامَةِ

And I do swear by the blaming soul.

أَيَحْسَبُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ أَلَّن نَّجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُۥ

Does the human being think that We will not collect his bones?

بَلَىٰ قَـٰدِرِينَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّسَوِّىَ بَنَانَهُۥ

Yes indeed, We are able to reconstruct his finger tips.

بَلْ يُرِيدُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُۥ

But the human being only wishes to do the most wrong right before him.

يَسْـَٔلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

He asks; when is the Day of Resurrection?

فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلْبَصَرُ

That is when the eyes are overwhelmed by the light.

وَخَسَفَ ٱلْقَمَرُ

And the moon is eclipsed.

وَجُمِعَ ٱلشَّمْسُ وَٱلْقَمَرُ

And the sun and the moon are expired,-

يَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ

-the human being will say on that day; is there a way out?

كَلَّا لَا وَزَرَ

Absolutely, no place is safe.

إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ ٱلْمُسْتَقَرُّ

Only to your Lord, on that day, will be the final destiny.

يُنَبَّؤُا۟ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ

The human being will be informed on that day what caused him to advance and regress.

بَلِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفْسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ

The human being will fully see his own soul.

وَلَوْ أَلْقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُۥ

No apologies will be accepted.

لَا تُحَرِّكْ بِهِۦ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِۦٓ

Do not move your tongue to hasten it.

إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَهُۥ وَقُرْءَانَهُۥ

Indeed it is We who will collect it and make it a Quran.

فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَـٰهُ فَٱتَّبِعْ قُرْءَانَهُۥ

Then once We recite it, you shall then follow such a Quran.

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُۥ

Then indeed it is We who will explain it.

كَلَّا بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ

Absolutely, you love this fleeting life.

وَتَذَرُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ

And neglect the Hereafter.

وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاضِرَةٌ

Some faces, on that day, will be radiant.

إِلَىٰ رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَةٌ

Looking towards their Lord.

وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بَاسِرَةٌ

And some faces, on that day, will be distorted.

تَظُنُّ أَن يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَةٌ

Knowing the worst is about to happen to them.

كَلَّآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلتَّرَاقِىَ

Absolutely, when it reaches the collar bones.

وَقِيلَ مَنْ رَاقٍ

And he is told; is there any one to relieve it?

وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ ٱلْفِرَاقُ

And he will know it is indeed time to depart.
