المعارج

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

In the name of God; The All-Gracious, The All-Merciful.

سَأَلَ سَآئِلٌۢ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍ

A questioner asked about an inevitable punishment. 

لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ

The unfaithful have no defender against-  

مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ

God, possessor of the highest heights.

تَعْرُجُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَٱلرُّوحُ إِلَيْهِ فِى يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُۥ خَمْسِينَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ

The angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a day that its length is fifty thousand years.

فَٱصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا

Therefore be patient, a graceful patience.

إِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُۥ بَعِيدًا

They surely see it far away. 

وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًا

And We see it near.

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ ٱلسَّمَآءُ كَٱلْمُهْلِ

The Day when the vacuum becomes like molten lava.

وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ

And the mountains will be like fluffy wool.

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا

And no friend will ask about a friend.

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ

They will see them. The guilty wishes he could ransom his son on that day to avoid the suffering. 

وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ

And his spouse and his brother. 

وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ

And his tribe who raised him. 

وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ

And everyone on the land, if only it could save him.  

كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا لَظَىٰ

No way, there will surely be hellfire,-  

نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ

-aggressive, ready to burn.  

تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ

Calling on those who turned their back and fled.  

وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ

And hoarded and counted. 

إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعًا

Truly, the human was created impatient. 

إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا

When he suffers any hardship, he whines.

وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا

And when he is blessed, he becomes stingy. 

إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ

Except those who observe the contact prayer.  

ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ

Those who regularly observe their contact prayer. 

وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ

And those who set aside a rightful share from their  money-

لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ

-for the beggar and the deprived.  

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ

And those who acknowledge the truth regarding the Day of Faith. 

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ

And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 

إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ

Indeed there is no security from the punishment of their Lord.

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ

And those who keep their chastity. 

إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ

Except with their spouses or those who are rightfully theirs, then they are not to be blamed. 

فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ

But those who transgress beyond this, then these are in opposition. 

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ

And those who are highly trustworthy and keep their word. 

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ

And those who stand by their testimonies. 

وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ

And those who remember their contact prayers.  

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ مُّكْرَمُونَ

These will dwell as honored ones in paradises. 

فَمَالِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِعِينَ

Therefore, what is preventing the unfaithful from joining you?- 

عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ

-From the right and from the left, en masse? 

أَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعِيمٍ

Does every one of them wish to enter the blissful Paradise?

كَلَّآ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَـٰهُم مِّمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

No way, We have created them and they know from what. 

فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْمَشَـٰرِقِ وَٱلْمَغَـٰرِبِ إِنَّا لَقَـٰدِرُونَ

Therefore, I swear by the Lord of  all eastern locations and the western locations that We are indeed fully capable- 

عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ

-of substituting instead of them, those who are better than them and We will never be overtaken. 

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا۟ وَيَلْعَبُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ يُلَـٰقُوا۟ يَوْمَهُمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَ

Therefore, let them blunder and play around until they come face to face with their appointed day.  

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ

The day when they come out of the graves in a hurry, as though they are herded to the altars. 

خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ

With their eyes subdued, humility overwhelms them. This is the day that was promised.
